« Newt Romney », Israël et les Palestiniens

La bataille engagée entre Newt Gin­grich et Mitt Romney pour obtenir l'investiture répu­bli­caine pour l'élection amé­ri­caine de novembre a encore fait rage jeudi 26 janvier à l'occasion du dernier débat publique organisé pour les pri­maires en Floride avant le vote du 31 janvier.

L'ancien gou­verneur du Mas­sa­chus­setts a cogné comme jamais aupa­ravant sur son plus sérieux rival. Ce duel a cependant connu une pause lorsqu'un quidam arabo-​​américain répu­blicain ("ça existe", s'est-il senti obligé de pré­ciser) est revenu sur la formule de M. Gin­grich selon laquelle le peuple pales­tinien était une "invention". Les deux bel­li­gé­rants sont tombés d'accord sur le dossier palestinien.

L'intéressé a per­sisté et signé sur "l'invention", on s'y attendait, avant de se fendre d'un plus étonnant "Mitt Romney a raison" qui ren­voyait aux propos très durs tenus par ce dernier à propos de M. Obama et des posi­tions adoptées par les Pales­ti­niens, accusés de refuser l'existence d'Israël. Flo­rilège : "Israelis would be happy to have a two-​​state solution. It's the Pales­ti­nians who don't want a two-​​state solution ; they want to eli­minate the State of Israel (…) There's the belief that the Jewish people do not have a right to a state (…) This pre­sident [Barack Obama] threw Israel under the bus with regards to defining the '67 borders as the starting point of nego­tia­tions. I think he dis­res­pected Prime Minister Ben­jamin Neta­nyahu, Bibi Neta­nyahu. I think he has time and time again shown dis­tance from Israel, and that created, in my view, a greater sense of aggression on the part of the Palestinians."

Quant à M. Gin­grich il a conclu par cet enga­gement : "On the first day that I am pre­sident, if I do become pre­sident, I will sign an exe­cutive order directing the State Department to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jeru­salem to send the signal we're with Israel ."
